Energy Efficiency Basics: Heat Flow, Insulation, and More

Improving your home’s insulation can be one of the most cost-efficient things you can do to reduce your home’s utility bills. As every home is different, however, it can be difficult to determine which areas to focus on. Arry’s Roofing Services discusses the basics of heat flow, R-values, and home improvement projects that can help improve your home’s energy efficiency.

How Does Heat Flow?

Heat constantly moves towards colder areas. It does this through three ways, conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction occurs when two objects of different temperatures are in contact. Convection occurs when warmer areas of gas or liquid move to cooler areas in liquid and gas. Radiation is heat transfer without a medium, like the sun’s heat. When heat moves to cooler areas, your home can become uncomfortable.

Insulation combats this by blocking heat transfer. An insulated attic prevents the sun from heating up your attic in summer. Energy-efficient Clearwater roofing materials, like the ones we install, also help. These materials reflect the sun’s heat away from your roof and re-emit any heat that gets through.

What Is the R-Value?

The R-value is a measure of the product’s thermal resistance. Higher R-values mean better insulation. The R-value of a product can change in a material based on its thickness. When you ask us to insulate your home, we’ll explain how much R-value our products will provide your home. We’re a certified provider of Owens Corning products, so you can be sure of your insulation’s quality and effectiveness.
