Learning about TPO, Part 2: Why Your Choice of Installer Matters

Thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) is a type of single-ply roofing membrane that is a top choice for both commercial and residential roofing in Clearwater, FL, and surrounding areas. It has a number of performance and installation advantages that make it an excellent choice for our Florida climate. TPO is very resistant to tears, punctures and impact – perfect for weathering tropical storms. It has excellent flexibility, which allows it to move and “flex” with a building.

TPO membrane is commonly available in white, gray, tan or black. White and light-colored TPO membranes offer excellent reflectivity for buildings that require high-performing, energy-efficient roofing systems. This means that white and light-colored TPO membranes reflect solar energy rather than absorbing it, so they keep the interior of a building cooler and contribute to lower energy consumption. They also stand up well to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and ozone exposure.

Roofers prefer TPO because it is more durable and also easier to install than rubber roofing. In fact, the seam strength of a TPO roof is up to four times stronger than a traditional rubber roof. TPO can also be installed in a wide range of temperatures without compromising the hot-air welds that join the seams together.

When properly installed and maintained, a TPO roofing system should have a service life of 10 to 20 years. However, it is crucial that a TPO roofing system (and any other roofing system) be installed by a qualified contractor. Arry’s Roofing trains and certifies all of our installers in the proper application of TPO roofing.
