Occasionally our team gets a request for not only a new roof installation, but installation of an entirely new roofing material. That was the case for this home on Kirkaldy Drive in Palm Harbor. The homeowners chose to remove the old tile and opt for a beautiful new GAF Lifetime Shingle roof.
If you are trying to decide between using Tampa tile roofing or shingles for your home, here are some considerations.
- Price. Tile is more expensive to install than shingles but also lasts 50 to 70 years or more, two to three times longer than asphalt shingles. This means shingles cost less money initially, but over time the cost works out to be about the same.
- Durability. While GAF shingles with special Dura Grip® adhesive seals pass two critical wind resistance tests (ASTM D3161, Class F, 110 mph; ASTM D7158, Class H, 150 mph), high winds can dislodge shingles more easily than tile.
- Weight. Not all roofs can handle the heavy weight of a tile roof. If you are interesting in switching to tile, you should consult with one of our inspectors to determine the load capacity of your roof.
- HOA requirements. Some homeowner’s associations require the use of tile, so refer to your neighborhood guidelines before making a decision.
