Learning about TPO, Part 2: Why Your Choice of Installer Matters

Thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) is a type of single-ply roofing membrane that is a top choice for both commercial and residential roofing in Clearwater, FL, and surrounding areas. It has a number of performance and installation advantages that make it an excellent choice for our Florida climate. TPO is very resistant to tears, punctures and impact – perfect for weathering tropical storms. It has excellent flexibility, which allows it to move and “flex” with a building.

TPO membrane is commonly available in white, gray, tan or black. White and light-colored TPO membranes offer excellent reflectivity for buildings that require high-performing, energy-efficient roofing systems. This means that white and light-colored TPO membranes reflect solar energy rather than absorbing it, so they keep the interior of a building cooler and contribute to lower energy consumption. They also stand up well to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and ozone exposure.

Roofers prefer TPO because it is more durable and also easier to install than rubber roofing. In fact, the seam strength of a TPO roof is up to four times stronger than a traditional rubber roof. TPO can also be installed in a wide range of temperatures without compromising the hot-air welds that join the seams together.

When properly installed and maintained, a TPO roofing system should have a service life of 10 to 20 years. However, it is crucial that a TPO roofing system (and any other roofing system) be installed by a qualified contractor. Arry’s Roofing trains and certifies all of our installers in the proper application of TPO roofing. Learning about TPO, Part 1: Why It Works for Commercial & Residential Tampa Roofing

arry'stpoTPO, or thermoplastic polyolefin, is a very popular material used for roofing Tampa commercial structures, but it can also be used on homes. It’s a sort of reinforced rubber that’s extremely durable and able to withstand the demands of rooftop exposure. TPO stands up well to rough treatment and resists tears and punctures. Properly installed TPO will last for 10-20 years, depending on how it’s installed.

TPO comes in long lengths which are then heat-welded together, making it a versatile choice for structures of all sizes and functions. It’s considered one of the most economical options for large, low-slope roofing applications like you’d find on top of a warehouse, shopping center or restaurant, which is why millions of square feet are installed annually.

Most commonly manufactured in white, TPO does a great job reflecting heat and therefore keeps the interior of a building cooler. Manufacturers are also coming out with various light colors as an alternative to white. In addition, TPO is 100% recyclable. For these reasons, it’s considered a “green” roofing material.

Arry’s Roofing is a certified installer of this popular roofing option, and we also handle TPO roof repair in Tampa. Next week, check out our blog to find out why proper installation is crucial for a long-lasting TPO roof. Let Your Roof Breathe (Part 1): Importance of Ventilation

Proper attic ventilation is important for commercial and residential properties. According to the Federal Housing Administration, there should be at least a square foot of ventilation for every 300 sq. ft. of space in the attic. Our roofing contractors in St. Petersburg FL also advise to equally partition the required ventilation space between exhaust and intake vents. This will create a balance between the amount of air that goes in and out of your home.Read Full Article
